PCH is a really busy road so it won’t always feel easy to stop for the photo. I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19. Thanks to a lecture series that was happening I was able to get visit this amazing home for free. Docents were placed throughout the home to offer insight but it was nice to get to walk around on our own. The biggest bummer is that you cannot take photography indoors. I was in awe of the living room and so badly wanted a picture.

The Missions and Ranchos are a special designation of historic homes that have such a unique position in telling the history of southern California that they deserve a separate page. The Ennis House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1924. The house has 27,000 perforated and patterned decomposed granite blocks. The house consists of two buildings that are separated by a courtyard. You can see the house in a number of movies including Blade Runner.

Neutra ran his architectural from the original house from 1932 until a fire destroyed most of the main building in 1963. Storyline
It would be nice to dream about them being run through an editing unit like an AVID machine, which was used to make the AMC series Remember WENN look as if it were filmed on old Technicolor stock from the 1940s. That would give them a "period" look that would be just perfect. The character of Addie Mills was based on the real-life experiences of Gail Rock, who grew up in a similar family environment in Valley, Nebraska, the real-life counterpart to the story setting of Clear River. Her original story and the subsequent Thanksgiving tale were adapted to the screen by Eleanor Perry, and Gail Rock and Alan Shayne did the remainder.

The books also reveal that her father owns the gravel pit where James Mills works. Addie finally wins her class Christmas tree in a supervised contest between Gloria Cott and herself by using a guessing technique learned from her father. When she brings the prize home, both she and her grandmother are delighted at the prospect of their first Christmas with a tree. James angrily orders the tree removed; he even accuses Addie of cheating Gloria to win it.
Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house. The Hollyhock House was designed by Frank Llyod Wright for Aline Barnsdall though she quickly became disillusioned with the home and donated it to the city of LA. The hollyhock was Aline’s favorite flower and was used as a theme throughout the house. Even if you cannot tour the home it is visible from the park and the city views are wonderful as well. I recommend stopping by for at least a quick visit if you can.
